Honey
There is an abundance of flavours and sources currently available to a savvy investor. One can pick up a jar of ‘honey’ for as little as a pound. These honeys are highly mixed and processed with a large number of additives and antibiotics. Although, it is arguable that these ‘cheapest honeys’ represent the best value for money, in the true sense of the word, these jars are not the real staff.
So what is real honey? It is essentially flower nectar collected by the honeybees and extracted by a beekeeper. When the beekeeper is still immature nectar is often replaced with ‘sugary feeds’, furthermore, this is encouraged for commercial purposes. Basically these ‘sugary feeds’ barely touched by the bees, are labelled and marketed as the real thing. The only sure way to have the real honey is to own a beehive. However, not everyone has access to a plot of land, or can spare enough time to take on such a commitment.
So what is the best honey to buy? Wild honey harvested from hollowed out trees in the wild. Raw honey could be any honey that comes directly from the hive and has not been pasteurized. These honeys can still contain all sorts besides nectar.
Honey flavours: Most, if not any, flowering plants produce nectar that can be gathered by the honeybees and become honey. Depending on a seasonal flowering and a position of a beehive, honeys can be distinguished into different flavours. Honey is rarely 100% monocultural and it is the predominate flavour that is usually on the label. Some flavours are more delicate than the others, and it is up to an individual to decide which flavours are stronger of better. Currently popular flavours are Acacia, Borage, Bean Flower, Buckwheat, Rapeseed, Apple blossom, Lavender, Thyme, Heather, Manuka, Lime tree, Wild flower, Orange blossom, Eucalyptus, Mint, Cherry blossom. Common geographically sourced honey can be classified as English, Scottish, European, American, Chinese, Mediterranean, African, Asian, Northern.
